Screening for liver fluke and bile duct cancer in Maha Sarakham.

On September 12, 2015, the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Institute, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Watcharin Loylom, Acting Director of the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Institute, Khon Kaen University, in collaboration with Mahasarakham University, the Mahasarakham District Public Health Office, the Mahasarakham Provincial Public Health Office, Sutthavej Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Mahasarakham University, and the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, organized the “Liver Fluke and Cholangiocarcinoma Screening Campaign” at the Chalerm Phra Kiat Convention Center, commemorating the 5th cycle birthday celebration of His Majesty the King on April 2, 2015, in Mueang District, Mahasarakham Province.
This event was honored by the presence of Associate Professor Dr. Jindaporn Chamraslertlak, Vice President for Human Resource Development and Operational Systems, who gave the opening speech. Dr. Samanmit Attanak, Director of Yang Talat Hospital, presented the report on the event.
The screening for liver fluke and cholangiocarcinoma attracted 496 participants from Kantharawichai and Mueang Mahasarakham districts, as well as students and staff from Mahasarakham University. Of the 442 individuals who underwent ultrasound, 14 (3.17%) were identified as suspected of having cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), while 19 were referred for other reasons. Urine tests for liver fluke were also conducted on 496 individuals, revealing a liver fluke infection in 137 (27.62%).
