From January 29-31, 2026, the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Institute, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wacharin Loylom, Director of the Institute, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Atthaphol Titapan, Head of the Cholangiocarcinoma Center of Excellence at Srinakarin Hospital and a member of the Institute's board, collaborated with Udon Thani Cancer Hospital, led by Dr. Thiti Ungaree, Director of Udon Thani Cancer Hospital, and Dr. Krittiya Butthongkhamwong, Deputy Director for Medical Affairs, to organize the “Cholangiocarcinoma Patient Care Capacity Building Project at Udon Thani Cancer Hospital.” The event took place in the meeting room on the 8th floor of the Administration and Outpatient Building at Udon Thani Cancer Hospital, Udon Thani Province.
This initiative aims to enhance the capabilities of personnel and service units involved in screening, care, and treatment of cholangiocarcinoma patients, and to create a comprehensive care team. It elevates the treatment standards of Udon Thani Cancer Hospital, striving to become a center for cholangiocarcinoma surgery and treatment, thereby expanding public access to services. This is under the Action Research Project for addressing liver fluke disease and cholangiocarcinoma in Health Regions 7, 8, 9, and 10. The event began with an opening ceremony presided over by Dr. Thiti Ungaree, Director of Udon Thani Cancer Hospital. Dr. Krittiya Butthongkhamwong, Deputy Director of Medical Affairs at Udon Thani Cancer Hospital, gave a report. Dr. Supakit Sirilak, Director of the Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI), discussed the background of the key objective: "Thailand Free from Liver Fluke Disease and No Deaths from Cholangiocarcinoma," the cholangiocarcinoma patient care capacity development project, and the participation of the Regional Office of Disease Control and Prevention 8, Udon Thani Province (RDCP 8), in addressing liver fluke disease and cholangiocarcinoma. 😎 Dr. Saman Futrakul, Director of the Regional Health Office 8, and Prof. Dr. Suthipan Chitpimonmas, Advisor to the Office of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), were present as observers.
This was followed by lectures and knowledge sharing on the care and treatment of bile duct cancer patients, along with a multidisciplinary team meeting and pre-surgical visits to bile duct cancer patients. The bile duct cancer surgeries were performed on January 30th, involving a multidisciplinary team from the Bile Duct Cancer Research Institute, the Center of Excellence for Bile Duct Cancer at Srinakarin Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, Udon Thani Cancer Hospital, Udon Thani Hospital, Somdej Phra Yuparat Thabho Hospital, and nurses and medical staff, totaling over 200 participants.
